It’s Thanksgiving here in the U.S.! Even though we should think about what we’re grateful every day, it’s nice to have a special day devoted to doing that. And eating turkey!
And do you know who has a lot to be grateful for? The peach kitty! And not exactly for the reasons you may think. So I will give you the list of things my friend is thankful for every day.
That he and his family still all live together. That’s right, we had him, his two siblings, and his mom TNR’d over the summer of 2021, and they are all still healthy, and still living here in the neighborhood. The other day, my human caught him and his mom on the security cam, playing chase.
That he has a comfy home outside. While humans may look at him and feel sad that he is exposed to the elements and nasty weather, it’s not really like that. They live in a cozy spot that is sheltered from rain and they keep each other warm. Plus, this is southern California, where it doesn’t get that cold or snow.
That he has an endless supply of food. Yes, our neighbor feeds him, his family, and a couple of other community cats, but he also supplements the cat food with hunting. One morning my human saw him tossing around some sort of bloody prey. She didn’t want to look too close because she gets grossed out easily, but it was clear he was proud of his catch.
That he has a boundless supply of fun and entertainment. Even though we live in a big city, the hill we live on is full of things that are interesting to kitties! Trees to climb, hiding spots, other cat friends, and all the things that attract indoor creatures (like humans) to hike around outside.
He may not realize it, but he is grateful for TNR. Because occasionally unneutered cats come onto our property and get into hormone-fueled arguments. And he actually hates those and makes himself scarce! He has no clue, but getting TNR’d is the only reason he’s not one of those guys.
He is grateful for his freedom. He loves coming and going as he pleases and not having to answer to anyone. He’s utterly mystified by my life. He’s tried to grab me by the leash and steal me away more than once! And he doesn’t get why I have to have my human around at all times. He just thinks his way of life is better than mine!
And I guess he is grateful for me. At least he certainly seems to like me a lot!
A lot of people think the peach kitty needs to be rescued and that he’s in danger. The truth is that he lives in nature on a quiet street with his family. And he has friends like me, and humans who feed him and give him treats and look out for him and his family. Sure, he would be safer inside — but then he wouldn’t have his family anymore (they are definitely feral), or his freedom. He’s curious about my weird (to him) life, but he’s not necessarily attracted to it. Maybe he will decide to give it a try someday. But for now, he’s grateful for life he’s been given.
