Cat-Friendly Chicken Pot Pie (Secret Ingredient!)

I have an awesome chicken pot pie recipe, and it’s exclusive to me! That’s because my human created a secret ingredient that made it cat-friendly. And a couple of added tweaks make it taste good to humans too.

Often quick chicken pot pie recipes call for cream of chicken or mushroom soup. And you know all the salt and additives they contain aren’t good for kitties! (And not really for humans either.) So my human did a little bit of research and put together a cat-safe concoction. She mixed unsweetened almond milk with some chicken bone broth and reduced it by half, adding cornstarch to give it a gravy-like consistency.

She used the almond milk since cats are lactose intolerant. Goat’s milk would have been good too, and maybe even the cat milk you find in pet shops. But my human doesn’t like goat’s milk, and she wanted something that would taste good to her. That was unsweetened almond milk.

In spite of my human’s protests, I think I did a very good job as sous chef.

Since the chicken pot pies were individual, my human was able to add human friendly ingredients like shallots and spices after she made my pie.

Both my human and I were thrilled with the results! Check out the video below. The recipe is under it.

Individual Chicken Pot Pies for Cats and Humans

Makes four cat-sized portions or two human servings.

You will need:

4 6-oz. ramekins, 2 8 to 10-oz. ramekins, or mix and match — 2 6 oz. ramekins and 1 8-oz ramekin

Ingredients:

1-1/4 c. shredded chicken (about 140 grams)
6 oz. frozen green beans, thawed
1/2-3/4 c. condensed almond milk/chicken bone broth blend*
1 refrigerated pie crust, brought to room temperature.
1/4 c. shallots, finely chopped, and salt and pepper to taste (for the human version)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Mix the first three ingredients together, and add to the cat-friendly ramekins.

Once you’ve done that, you can add the human-friendly ingredients and fill the ramekins you plan to eat yourself. (Hint – you may have to add more salt than you normally would, since the cat version has little to none.)

If you are using all 6-oz. ramekins, just unroll the pie crust and cut out discs about 1-1/2” wider than the ramekins. If you are using larger ramekins, you may have to roll it up into a ball and reroll into circles big enough to fit the tops of all the ramekins.

Place the pie crusts over each ramekin and crimp to seal. Cut slits in the center of each crust to vent.

Place the ramekins on a baking sheet and cook for 30 minutes, or until the crusts are golden brown.

Let cool and enjoy! Let cat pies should be cool longer than the human pies to make sure your kitties don’t burn their mouths.

* This substitute for condensed soup takes a little time but is much healthier. To make the condensed “milk,” combine about 2 c. of almond milk and 1/4 c. of chicken bone broth in a sauce pan and simmer over medium low heat for about half an hour to 45 minutes, or until reduced by half, stirring occasionally. (You do have to keep an eye on it or it will boil over!) Add about 2 T. of cornstarch to help it reach a gravy-like consistency.
