I had a rare quiet day at the children’s hospital. When my human signed us in and we went to the lobby, there was only one patient there, with his mom. And his face totally lit up when he saw me! That was awesome, and since we had time, my human let him pet me for as long as he wanted. Meanwhile she chatted — sort of — with the mother. They were mostly Spanish speaking, but my human understands enough by now to carry on a conversation. That is, as long as the subject is me.
Only a handful of exam rooms had patients, so we took our time there too. The first room had a family of four, the parents and two kids. The mother, and the kid getting looked at, had the same birth defect that confined them to wheelchairs. The father and the other, older youngster didn’t have the defect. They were all really awesome, sweet people, and both my human and I enjoyed visiting with them. The next room we looked into turned out to have the boy from the lobby. Since we hadn’t done it in the lobby, we took the opportunity to take an Instamatic photo of me with him there.
On our way out of the exam room area, we saw a pretty little girl in a wheelchair having a cookie with her mom. So we stopped by for a while before heading up to the surgery center. The one patient there was recovering and still asleep, which was too bad because her mother told us she loves cats! But she did take a photo of me looking over at the girl to show her later. Then the mom showed us photos of her with their two cats at home. My human had a long conversation with her in hopes that the little girl might wake up, but she was totally out.
While I enjoy meeting lots of patients on my visits, I really do like the quiet days too. They are stress-free, and we really get to have quality time with everyone we see. So it was a really nice day.
